Tips for Choosing the Perfect Homesite

April 5, 2022

When the moment arises to build your custom new construction home, the design of the home itself is not the only thing that you have to keep in mind. The location you choose to build your home bears much weight throughout the home building process, and settling on the correct one for you is of the utmost importance. Whether you would like to have your own piece of land to build your home on, or if you’ve taken a liking to an already established community—our staff at Weston Dean Custom Homes has compiled a few items to keep in mind when trying to find the perfect place for your dream home.

Think about what you want

One of the most important things you’ll need to think about is the type of environment you want to be around. Are you hoping to be only a short drive away from the excitement and endless activity of big city life? Do you want a private area to settle down and grow in? When you figure out what sort of environment you want to surround yourself with, you’ll be able to start the true journey to finding your ideal home location.

Prioritize your needs

After figuring out what sort of environment you would like to live in, it is time to think about what sort of things you need to have around you. If you have or plan to have kids of school age, you’ll want to look into the school districts within the areas that you have been looking at moving. You’ll also want to think about job opportunities. Would you rather have a short commute to work or does a longer drive give you the chance to unwind at the end of the day? Take the time to research some planned commercial and residential developments around the areas as well—as this will give you an idea of what the future could look like for you in this certain location.

Consider the costs

Finances play a huge role in landing on the actual location and construction of your custom home, so you will want to look into all of the costs surrounding each specific area you’re interested in. If you decide that you’d like to build in an established community, you will inevitably need to pay a separate price for the home site before construction can begin which will be based on an average price per acre.

If you plan to build on a lot that you already own, you’ll need to make sure that you evaluate the layout of the lot before you get too far into the process. If there is bedrock or hills that may need retaining walls, this will add to your costs before you start building. At Weston Dean Custom Homes, we are always happy to set up a meeting for a free lot evaluation to review the land you want to build on and determine the ideal location for your home within the actual perimeter.

Finalize your home design

Having a complete home design already drawn up can help exponentially when it comes time to choose your ideal lot. This ensures that you can in fact build your dream home in a specific location without having to sacrifice any square footage of the home in order to fit into a smaller space.

At Weston Dean Custom homes, we’ve helped numerous individuals find the perfect location for their new construction home across the Texas Hill Country, and we will continue doing so for many more years to come.
