How Long Does It Take to Build a Custom Home?

At Weston Dean Custom Homes, we cherish every opportunity to bring someone’s dream home to life. As a San Antonio custom home builder, we’ve designed and built a broad variety of homes, each unique to the customer and their family. Our philosophy is that every family deserves a home as unique as they are, so no home and no construction process is identical. That means the time it takes to build a custom home depends on the size and complexity of your home. The more home you get the longer it takes to build, to an extent. 

  • From the time the foundation is poured, we aim to build custom homes in 7-9 months.
  • The variation within that range depends on the square footage and complexity of your home.
  • The construction time can grow longer due to unusual weather delays, change orders, or design selections.
  • Our thorough design process can last a while too, as we carefully flesh out every detail of your custom design.

A census survey in 2016 estimated an average of 10 to 16 months to build a custom home. We keep our build times under that benchmark in a number of ways. First, that average is inflated by regions of the country where it’s simply a lot harder to build a custom home than the areas we typically build in. Think about the logistical difficulties of building in extremely rural or urban areas. Next, the national average is higher because of common construction delays. One study found that about a third of construction projects have at least one change order. Change orders are amendments to the original construction contract that both parties agree to. They disrupt the original outline of construction, creating delays and usually cost overruns as well.

Change orders are a reality in any construction industry, and we have a streamlined process to limit the disruption they can cause.
