2020 Luxury Home Design Trends

December 18, 2020

This year probably didn’t turn out how you expected it would—your travel plans, monumental life events and daily schedule might have looked different than you envisioned. A year that placed such an emphasis on spending time at home helped homeowners realize what they liked (and didn’t like) about their houses. Weston Dean Custom Homes noticed a shift in what customers envisioned in their new luxury homes, and we’ve rounded up the top trends from the past year that we predict will be top-of-mind for the foreseeable future.

Flexible floor plans and rooms

Floor plans are a matter of preference and needs for every home buyer, and trends in layouts can vary depending on region, home style and more. As we mentioned above, floor plan trends in 2020 were heavily influenced by the influx of time spent at home. More people spent their workdays, school days and free time at home this year than ever before, and that created a need for more usable, livable space inside their homes.

Home offices rose in the ranks of must-haves when selecting a floor plan. Whether it was for working adults or used as a virtual learning space for the kids, there was an immense need for a designated area to focus, learn and work. Flex spaces or extra bedrooms were also used for this purpose, especially when additional separation was needed for multiple family members spending time at home. These also provided much-needed space for playrooms, media rooms, a home gym, or a simple space to retreat.

Ample outdoor living space

Usable space inside of your home is one thing—but what about outdoor living? We’ve always considered outdoor patios a must-have feature for our homes, especially considering the beautiful Texas Hill Country surroundings we build in. We definitely noticed an emphasis on these spaces from our buyers this year, as outdoor living allows for more flexibility in how you spend your time at home. It gives everyone in the household the important opportunity to breathe fresh air and get a much-needed change of scenery after a few hours spent working or learning from home. Building custom means our buyers can get as creative as they want with their space, and many choose to include outdoor kitchens, media rooms, fireplaces, pools and more.

Natural home decor elements

This year was stressful for many people, which might have led to the next design trend. Incorporating natural materials and elements into your home has long been thought to help relieve stress by offering a calming effect. Not only does this approach breathe life into your home, but it also warms up interiors and exteriors. Weston Dean has always prioritized the use of style-appropriate natural materials, such as regional stone, natural woods and large windows to allow in natural lighting. We’re thrilled to see homeowners so excited about incorporating these finishes and features into their homes.

Looking forward

As this year comes to a close, it’s interesting to look back and see how quickly preferences can adjust. Whether the circumstances are in or out of a homeowner’s control, it’s important for builders to react to changes and continue to meet the needs of their customers. Weston Dean Custom Homes helps bring your dreams to reality, and we’ll continue to do so for years to come.
