Your Home Maintenance Checklist Just in Time for Summer

May 6, 2022

With the summer months quickly approaching, your mind is undoubtedly drifting toward cool nights under the stars and beachfront vacations on the horizon—but first, you might need to take care of a few things at home. When it comes to your home maintenance, you can never be too safe—that’s why at Weston Dean Custom Homes, we’ve put together the ultimate summer home checklist to ensure your home is ready to take on the Texas heat.

Exterior checklist

Before the weather gets to be a bit too warm, it’s best to start off your home maintenance with your exterior checklist. With the spring showers we’ve experienced, your sidewalk and driveway might be in need of some extra attention—and going over the areas with a power washer is never a bad idea to clear away any dirt, mold or grime that might have built up.

Your gutters are another area that you won’t want to glance over, even though you might be tempted to do so. While it’s never particularly fun to clear out any leaves or debris from your roof, it’s definitely necessary to ensure that everything is in working condition.

Washing your windows and window screens is another thing to take care of before you move to the interior checklist for your home maintenance. For screens, it’s best to gently wash them with hot soapy water, and if you find yourself scrubbing without seeing any results—it may be time to simply replace them. This is also a great time to check your windows and make sure that they are sealed properly in order to preserve the cool air in your home when the air conditioner is on.

Finally, take the time to tidy up around your home before patio season is in full swing. Clean up any sticks or debris that have accumulated throughout your yard from any spring storms, and think about giving your patio a refresh. Updating some outdoor furniture or sprucing up your outdoor kitchen will give you a great excuse to have some summertime get-togethers with your friends and family.

Interior checklist

To ensure that everything in your home is in working order, you’ll want to check out all of your appliances including the hoses on your washing machine, dehumidifier, dishwasher, toilets and refrigerator to ensure that they are all working properly. Typically, the hoses need to be replaced every three to five years, but it’s important to regularly check them just in case. If you see any signs that they may be leaking, you’ll want to make a note to bring in a professional to see if there has been any damage done. Checking all fire and carbon monoxide detectors and replacing any batteries as necessary is also a great thing to add to your list this summer.

To make sure only cool air is circulating within your home, it’s once again time to change the direction of your ceiling fans so they are spinning counterclockwise. This ensures that the cold air is blowing down, cooling the room off and promoting energy savings as well. To change the direction of the blades, make sure the fan has come to a complete stop and simply look for the switch on the side of the fan and flip it to the opposite side.

Your air conditioner is a crucial element to your home in the summertime, so you’ll want to double check your filter and see if it’s time to switch it out for a new one. Try to keep your air conditioner on a set temperature throughout the summer as this will help keep it running smoothly throughout the coming months. If you see anything that might need to be looked at more carefully, it’s usually best to bring in a professional to make sure you’re ready for the summer heat.

Enjoy the summer in your Weston Dean Custom Home
