Tips to Incorporate Your Culture Into Your Home

March 1, 2022

Your culture is something to be proud of, and finding creative ways to embrace and commemorate your heritage can make you feel more in tune with yourself than ever before. At Weston Dean Custom Homes, we value diversity and representation in all of our custom-built homes. No matter what culture or heritage you identify with, it’s important to celebrate it—and there’s no place better than in your own residence. From wall decor and patterns to incorporating scents—there are many different ways to bring your culture and heritage to life in your home, and we’re here to help you find ways to start.

Furniture and Decor

One of the best ways to integrate your culture is through furniture and decor throughout the rooms of your home. Embrace your ethnic heritage and share it with others by adding antique or new cultural furniture pieces and incorporating decorative elements within your home. Represent artists from your culture by framing their art on your walls, or add some pictures from a family trip abroad in your home country. Wall art and decor is extremely expressive with so many possibilities, and it’s a great way to show off who you are and to share a glimpse of your background.

Additionally, there are nearly endless amounts of prints, pictures, sculptures and decorations available that represent different cultures all around the world to make your rooms and hallway extra unique. Adding even just a few heritage pieces to your home can make a huge difference, allowing for you to feel very in-touch with yourself, where you come from and what you believe in.

Patterned Fabrics

Like furniture and decor, patterns are another great way to add beautiful cultural accents into your home. Rugs, tapestries, pillows and blankets are all great ways to incorporate cultural patterns into your interior. Find heritage-inspired patterns that remain true to your background and beliefs, and from there look for any pieces that contain those prints. Patterned rugs often display an ethnic print and are considered a timeless feature in your home. Place a piece of furniture on top of it, such as a table or a bed, for an eye-catching element.

Add an ethnic-printed pillow and blanket over your couch for a subtle addition to represent your culture, as well as a tapestry that rings true to where you’re from. Patterns and textures are not only great ways to incorporate your heritage—but also fantastic ways to add individuality, personality and uniqueness to your home.

Cultural Aromas

There’s nothing like reminiscent smells to bring you back to where you or your ancestors come from—and there are multiple ways to do so. From cooking ethnic meals to adding beautiful plants—allow for culturally-significant scents to fill your home to pay tribute to your heritage. Even if you are exploring a culture that isn’t your own, it can serve as a great learning experience to embrace other backgrounds from around the world. The internet is full of ethnic recipes available at your fingertips, whether it be Pad Thai, Beef Empanadas or Chicken Curry. Step into your Weston Dean kitchen to fill your home with nostalgic smells of your culture, or explore new ones by trying a different recipe.

Another great way to smell your heritage throughout your home is by adding house plants and flowers that represent your culture. Find out what house plants came from certain parts of the world and explore which flowers originated in particular countries to bring beautiful decorations, smells, and representation into your home. If you’re wanting to introduce multiple cultures into your home, start adding plants from other parts of the world for even more inclusiveness—as well as an educational experience for your entire household and any guests that may pass through.
