The Ultimate Home Checklist before Leaving for Vacation

June 3, 2022

With the summer months officially upon us, vacation season is probably taking up most of your thoughts. While it might be difficult to pull your mind away from the packing list already forming, it’s important to take a few moments to ensure that your home is prepared to be on its own while you’re away—so read on to see our ultimate checklist our team at Weston Dean Custom Homes has put together to ensure your home is ready for summer vacation.

Double check your produce

One step you want to make sure you add to your list is cleaning out your fridge before you head out the door on your next vacation. Items such as fresh produce and dairy products are typically only good for a few days, so it’s always a good idea to remove them from your fridge before their shelf life ends. This is also a great time to make a stop at a local food pantry to donate any food items that won’t keep until you get back home.

Unplug any small appliances

Small items throughout your home such as blenders, coffee makers or toasters still use up energy even when you’re not using them if they are still plugged in. In order to ensure that you’re saving as much energy as possible—whether you’re on vacation or not—it’s best to get into the habit of unplugging these items whenever you’re done using them, but especially when you leave for vacation. For even more energy savings during any days away from home, it’s also not a bad idea to unplug any televisions, computers or even your Wi-Fi router while you’re at it.

Make a plan for house plants

House plants are a huge part of many people’s home decor, and they are a great way to bring some natural elements into your home design— but when you leave your home for a longer period of time, you’ll need to take extra care to make sure that they will be taken care of until you return. For plants such as cacti, they won’t need as much water as some of your other greenery will, so watering them once before you leave for a week-long vacation will ensure that they are good to go until you return. Another option is to reach out to a neighbor, friend or family member to look after your plants while you’re away—or, there are a number of self-watering products on the market today that you can also look into.

Set your thermostat

Before you walk out the door without a second glance back, don’t forget to set up your thermostat while you’re gone. Keeping up with the theme of energy savings, setting your thermostat higher than the typical temperature during the summertime can ensure that it’s not working overtime while you’re not at your home.
