Refresh Your Home With Our Spring Cleaning Checklist

March 15, 2022

The season of spring is rolling in fast, and there’s no better way to welcome in the fresh air and beautiful weather than a traditional spring cleaning. The winter weather and holiday season often bring chaos and disarray into our homes, and most of us have had zero motivation to deep-clean and tidy up. As the flowers start to bloom and the temperatures begin to rise, say goodbye to those winter blues by freshening up your home to prepare for the fastly approaching spring season. We know that sometimes, all you need is a little bit of direction to get the ball rolling—which is why at Weston Dean Custom Homes, we’ve provided you with the ultimate spring cleaning checklist to help you get back into your warm weather groove.

Conquer the clutter

One of the hardest things to overcome during the yearly spring cleaning is clutter. Between the holiday season, constant chaos and lack of motivation—clutter can be a whole lot easier to gain than most realize. Regardless of how the mess got there, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of—which is why it’s an essential first step in spring cleaning. A good starting point is to identify problem areas of clutter within your home, and then you can analyze the reasons for it. Is the clutter there for a specific reason, and is it necessary in any way? You may find yourself asking how it even got there in the first place, and from there you can come up with solutions for your clutter. Whether it be a yard sale, finding storage elsewhere, donating, or simply throwing things away—the most important part is implementing those solutions so you can move forward in your spring cleaning. To make things a little easier, take an hour each day to declutter before starting your cleaning process.

Make your living room brand new again

Your living room is the place where you and your family spend the most time, whether you’re relaxing after a long day at work or hosting a movie night with friends. With all of the popularity and foot traffic, your living room could probably use a little bit of TLC. First, clear off any surfaces and check for lost objects under the couches and chairs. Start from one area and move systematically across the living room, collecting things that don’t belong and placing them in either keep or donate piles. From there, let the cleaning instincts take over—dust off your TV stands, book shelves, video game consoles and coffee or end tables. Wash your curtains, drapes, blankets and throw pillows with removable covers—and don’t forget to disinfect any objects or toys with wipes or soap and water. Wash your windows and vacuum out the tracks, and use furniture polish to wipe down table tops and consoles. Clean your carpet or rug with a vacuum and carpet cleaner—then sweep and mop your hardwood floors. Open up the windows to let the fresh spring air in, and finish off with lighting your favorite candle in your newly refreshed living room.

Scrub the bathrooms

We all know how easy it is to quickly collect dirt and grime in our bathrooms, which is why it’s important to give them extra attention during spring cleaning. Temporarily remove all products from the shower, empty your cabinets and clear off countertops to get rid of any chaos and clutter. Throw out the expired or unwanted items, and reorganize your setup from there. From top to bottom, wipe down all drawers and dust each shelf—then deep-clean the shower and tub using bleach and disinfectant. Dust off light fixtures and vents, and use window cleaner to get spotless mirrors, sink hardware and windows. Wipe down the exterior of the toilet and clean the inside of the bowl with toilet cleaner, and use disinfectant spray to clean your sinks. Snake your drains to remove any built-up residue and to ensure that they’re draining properly, and wash your shower curtain and rugs for extra cleanliness. For squeaky clean walls, dilute a few drops of dish detergent or distilled white vinegar in a bucket of water and wipe down walls. Lastly, pat yourself on the back for achieving the spring cleaning bathroom of your dreams.

Polish the kitchen and unload the pantry

We get so used to minimally cleaning our kitchens that oftentimes, it’s a lot dirtier than we realize—which means that properly organizing and cleaning your kitchen requires going the extra mile. The fridge and pantry should be the areas you focus on first, as we often let food products pile up without throwing enough away. Get rid of any expired or untouched products, and make a grocery list of spring foods you’ll want to buy for your next grocery trip. Empty everything out, and scrub your fridge shelves, doors and walls with a sponge and warm water with baking soda—and wipe down your pantry with a multi-surface cleaner and cloth. From there, stick the plate from your microwave in the dishwasher and scrub the inside—then run a cleaning cycle on your oven. Wipe down all surfaces with multi-surface cleaners, and enjoy your revamped and refreshed kitchen.

Deep-clean the bedrooms

Your bedroom should be your own personal retreat after a long day—and it’s always more enjoyable when it’s fresh, clean and organized. Start by clearing out the dressers, nightstands or bedside tables. Get rid of any junk by adding to your keep and donate piles from the living room—and once your sorting is complete, it’s time for a total reset in your bedroom. Start a load of laundry for bed sheets, pillowcases, blankets and curtains. Vacuum or sweep the floor, and clean your mattresses using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum. Dust light fixtures and ceiling fans, and wipe down all surfaces to remove any dirt. Move furniture towards the center of the room to wipe down baseboards and trim—and consider switching up your setup and decor for a new-season change.

Additionally, it’s important to spend some time giving your closets a total reset and refresh. Start by emptying your closet, then carefully wipe down any ceiling lights and clear off all of your shelves and drawers. Wipe everything down with a duster and pay extra attention to your baseboards. Use your favorite cleaner to clean the closet doors and knobs, then sweep or vacuum the floor for an extra fresh closet. Once everything has been cleaned, organize your clothes, shoes and accessories as you put them back in the closet. Hanging items should be grouped by type, and if you’re feeling extra motivated—organize by color for extra efficiency and coordination. Closets can oftentimes become neglected and overcrowded, so it’s best to check them off your list while you’re participating in spring cleaning.
