Texas Hill Country history

Named after the Spanish word for corn, Helotes began as a small ranching and farming community before becoming a stagecoach stop and post office for cowboys driving cattle to auction in San Antonio. Homes, mercantile stores and filling stations popped up slowly in the area for decades before more attractions were built, drawing in residents from the booming metro. The area eventually became an incorporated city in 1981.

Small-town roots remain strong

The beauty of Helotes and the residents who make up the community is the ability to combine its rugged, country charm with needed development and modern amenities. Old Town Helotes—the newly renovated and revitalized downtown area—is packed with historical architecture, locally-owned restaurants, thriving businesses and unique attractions. Whether you’re thirsty for local beer, wine and coffee, hungry for some of the best Tex-Mex and barbecue around, hunting for treasured antiques or simply shopping for some new clothes and home goods, the small business owners in Helotes have got you covered.

Perhaps the most well-known attraction is the landmark John T. Floore Country Store. Founded in 1942, this music venue and dance hall has been graced by performances from dozens of the biggest names in music, including Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, B.B. King, Merle Haggard and more.

Cornyval, a local festival held every year since 1966, celebrates the town’s history and attracts upwards of 70,000 visitors annually. People from all over Texas and beyond make their way to Helotes for food, dancing, music, rodeo, arts and crafts, a carnival and pageant.
