Fall Maintenance Guide: Prepare Your Texas Home for the Season Ahead

September 1, 2026

Fall in Texas has a way of sneaking up on us. One day we’re thinking about staying cool through another hot afternoon, and the next, we’re enjoying crisp mornings, open windows and more time outdoors. For homeowners across San Antonio, Austin and the Texas Hill Country, fall is also one of the best times to take care of a few important home maintenance projects.

At Weston Dean Custom Homes, we believe a well-built home is about more than exceptional craftsmanship on move-in day. Thoughtful maintenance helps protect your investment, preserve your home's performance and keep your home comfortable for years to come. Here are a few of the areas we recommend checking as you head into the cooler months.

Give Your HVAC System Some Attention

After working hard through a Texas summer, your HVAC system deserves a little attention before temperatures begin to drop. Schedule a professional inspection and replace your air filters if needed. It's also a good time to make sure your heating system is operating properly before you actually need it. Check your vents and registers for obstructions, and make sure your outdoor HVAC equipment is clear of leaves, branches and other debris.

For homeowners considering new homes in San Antonio, TX or new construction homes in Austin, TX, energy efficiency is an important consideration from the beginning. Proper insulation, efficient systems and quality construction can all contribute to a more comfortable and efficient home.

Inspect Your Roof and Gutters

Fall is an excellent time to take a look at your roof before winter weather arrives. Check for damaged or missing shingles, areas around vents and flashing, and any signs of water intrusion. Clean leaves and debris from your gutters and make sure downspouts are directing water away from your home's foundation.

This is especially important throughout the Texas Hill Country, where mature trees and changing weather conditions can create additional maintenance needs.

Take a Look Outside

Your home's exterior deserves some attention, too. Walk around your property and look for cracks, damaged caulking, peeling paint or areas where water may be collecting. Trim branches that are growing too close to the roof or exterior of your home, and keep landscaping maintained around your foundation.

If you live on an acreage property in communities such as Bulverde, Dripping Springs, Boerne or Spring Branch, fall can also be a great time to evaluate your landscaping and outdoor spaces before the next growing season.

Check Your Windows and Doors

Small gaps around windows and doors can make a noticeable difference in your home's comfort and energy efficiency. Inspect weatherstripping and caulking around exterior openings and replace anything that has deteriorated. Make sure doors close and seal properly, and check your windows for drafts or signs of moisture.

When we design custom homes in San Antonio and Austin, we pay close attention to how a home interacts with its environment. Proper orientation, windows, insulation and air sealing all play an important role in creating a comfortable home.

Don't Forget Your Outdoor Living Spaces

Fall is one of our favorite times of year to enjoy outdoor living in Central Texas. Before you settle in for cooler evenings around the fire pit, give your patio, covered porch or outdoor kitchen a quick inspection.

Clean outdoor furniture, inspect lighting, check your grill and make sure any fireplaces or fire features are clean and ready for use. A little preparation now means more time enjoying these spaces when the weather is at its best.

Prepare Your Home for the Months Ahead

A little fall maintenance can go a long way toward protecting your home and keeping everything running smoothly. From HVAC systems and gutters to landscaping and outdoor living areas, this seasonal checklist is a great opportunity to catch small issues before they become larger ones.
