Creating Your Ideal Multigenerational Floor Plan

April 20, 2022

When it comes time to plan the design for your multigenerational home, you’ll want to think about a few specific items that will help you and your loved ones live comfortably with each other while still maintaining a necessary aspect of privacy throughout your home. At Weston Dean Custom Homes, we’ve worked tirelessly over the years to ensure that our clients are completely satisfied with the finished custom home they move into—and our team knows a thing or two about crafting an impressive multigenerational floor plan for the whole family to enjoy.

Focus on accessibility

The main factor that comes into play when determining the best multigenerational floor plan for your family is that a number of individuals will all be living in this home together—which means that the floor plan design needs to be accommodating for everyone.

Sometimes this is achieved by maintaining a single-story home, therefore completely getting rid of the challenge some family members may face when going up and down the stairs as they age. However, another way to add in a layer of practicality if you still would like a two-story home is to ensure that the staircases are wide enough to add in a chair lift if necessary. This aspect can also include adding wide hallways throughout the home as well, and even if it turns out to be an unnecessary addition, you will still have an incredibly beautiful open floor plan home that is welcoming for your entire family.

Think about additional entrances

Having a number of entrances throughout your home ensures that no matter what, your family members will be able to feel a greater sense of privacy as they come and go. This is also extremely beneficial if certain family members have a different schedule that they need to stick to. When you have your own entrance that you can use on a daily basis, you’ll never feel as if you are bothering anyone based on what time you may have to leave the house or if you’ll be getting back later than normal.

Make sure bedrooms come first

Although flex rooms are great to have in your home, you will definitely want to ensure that you first make bedrooms a priority. Having enough bedrooms to comfortably accommodate every individual in your household will ensure that no one ever feels overwhelmed from a lack of privacy. If possible, separating bedrooms by floors will give you and your family even more room to truly create a space all your own.

Make time for one another

Although privacy and personal space is crucial when you’re living in a multigenerational home, the most important aspect is truly being able to spend time with your loved ones on a daily basis. Your main living areas will be crucial for helping create an open and welcoming feeling for you all to relax and spend time together at the end of each day.
