Continuing Your Career After Relocating to San Antonio

September 21, 2021

You’re looking to relocate to San Antonio, and it’s no question as to why. With plenty of sunshine year-round, tailgates at high school football games and beefed-up breakfast tacos whenever your heart desires them, San Antonio is simply a great place to be. At Weston Dean Custom Homes, we’re here to make your dream home a reality in San Antonio, but we also want to help you in other areas to ensure that your move is as smooth and stress-free as possible. That’s why we’ve put together some tips to help you find your new career in a new city.

Update Your Resume

When looking for a new job, the first thing that comes to mind is updating your resume. Before you jump in though, do some research on the area you’ll be moving to. Start looking into what types of jobs you are interested in and find a few job descriptions related to those positions. This way, you’ll be able to see what hiring managers are looking for in terms of skills and experience, and you’ll be able to update your resume with items you might not have thought to list. This is a great way to make sure your future employers know you already have the knowledge that they’re looking for to give you a better chance of getting chosen for an interview. Once you’ve finished updating your resume, make sure to update it on any online sites you currently host it on like LinkedIn or CareerBuilder.

Research San Antonio Employers and Salary

Now that you have a better understanding of what’s available in the area, it’s time to look at specific companies, jobs and salary options.

If you work in a very specific industry, start your job search looking for specific job titles. If your skill sets are broad enough, try researching the best places to work in San Antonio and start looking at certain companies' job openings. Sign up for job search notifications, and send in your resume whenever you see a job that genuinely interests you. Make sure to keep a running list of jobs you’ve applied for. When you’re sending your resume to a variety of companies, you don’t want to get confused about which jobs you have and haven’t applied for yet.

When you’re applying for jobs, also keep in mind the salary. Saying that the salary doesn’t matter when you’re doing a job you love sounds like a very romantic idea. While you should look at jobs that you would truly enjoy doing, there are still bills to pay, and you should always be fairly compensated for the work you’ll be doing. Look at average salaries in the San Antonio area for jobs you’re finding in your searches on sites such as PayScale and GlassDoor.

Network in Your New Community

Do you already have friends or family who live in the San Antonio area? Maybe you know a few former co-workers who have relocated there. Reach out to people in your new community to see if they know of any job openings that you could be perfect for. See if there are job fairs or volunteer opportunities for some of the companies you’ve found interesting. Never be afraid to reach out to those around you for help when moving to a new area. That includes us.
