Color Trends for Homes in 2022

December 14, 2021

As 2021 comes to a close, the team at Weston Dean Custom Homes is looking ahead to the new year—and with a new year comes fresh color trends and inspiration for homeowners and builders alike. Read on to see the colors we predict will be big this year, and ways to incorporate them into your very own custom home in the greater San Antonio area.

Earth tones bring comfort and serenity

We saw homeowners shy away from light and bright color palettes in favor of more earthy, muted tones, and we expect that trend to dominate interior and exterior design in 2022. The popularity of earth tones in design stems from the desire for our homes to make us feel healthy, serene and centered. Colors in this family include natural blues, delicate greens, soft grays, organic reds and muted orange and brown tones.

Due to the delicate nature of earth tones, they can serve as a neutral base for just about any room in your home. Whether you lean toward cool or warm tones, picking swatches reminiscent of the natural surroundings makes for a soothing home that family and friends will enjoy spending time in. Additionally, earth tones can be incorporated into plenty of design styles: contemporary, rustic, traditional, Spanish revival, European and more

Pantone Color of Year offers pop of fun

In a history-making selection, the Pantone 2022 Color of the Year is a brand new color that’s never been produced before. Encompassing similar qualities as blues, but with a violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri “displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression” according to the Pantone website.

While we don’t expect homeowners to paint the walls of their home a whimsical purple, there are a few tasteful ways to incorporate the color into your aesthetic. Pantone’s design experts recommend balancing Veri Peri alongside some of the above mentioned earth tones, or letting it pop amongst a neutral palette of grays, taupes and whites.

White that doesn’t feel sterile

If you love the look of a blank slate or classic white, there’s a forward-thinking approach you can take to ensure it doesn’t feel sterile or uninviting. Look for an organic, enveloping white that creates a more natural feel in your home. A soft white can look cozy and comfortable when situated amongst warm wood tones, or alongside warm earth-toned accents.
