Choosing a Backsplash for Your Custom Kitchen

July 7, 2021

When designing a custom kitchen, most homebuyers focus on function first. They carefully plan for the placement of appliances, the layout of the cabinets, and the sprawling counter space that makes it easy to prepare meals for family and friends. The kitchen backsplash, however, is where personality shines through.

Wondering where to start? The Weston Dean Custom Homes design consultants put together the following five tips for choosing your kitchen backsplash.

Tile is timeless

Ceramic and porcelain tile are still two of the most popular options for kitchen backsplashes because they are durable and affordable. These materials are naturally resistant to heat, water and scratches, which is important in a busy kitchen. Plus, if one chips, individual tiles are easy to replace too. The other major benefit of tile is that it is available in a wide variety of colors, designs, and shapes to match your aesthetic.

Coordinate colors

Rather than matching the surrounding paint and countertops, consider a coordinating design that will compliment your other selections. This could use the same colors or something bolder depending on your preference. Many homeowners will also mix in different materials to add some texture to the design. During your design meeting, you will be able to review each kitchen backsplash option side-by-side and get advice from our award-winning interior design team as you fill out your finishes questionnaire.

Gather inspiration

Before this appointment, it may be helpful to review popular backsplash styles in magazines or on a website like Pinterest to see how homeowners are personalizing the space. The options can be overwhelming, so honing in on your personal style before entering the design studio can direct the conversation. A few modern practices we see are staggered subway tiles or diagonally placed chevron designs.

Add eye-catching elements

Eyes will naturally gravitate toward larger portions of the kitchen backsplash like the area above the range and above the sink. This makes them great places to get extra creative with distinct patterns or introduce alternate materials to add some texture to your design. The design team can show you recent examples or provide inspiration for eye-catching additions to your backsplash.

Ask about maintenance

Kitchen backsplashes are ultimately there to protect your walls from everyday messes so keeping up with cleaning is key to their longevity. Make sure to ask your design expert for information on maintaining your material of choice so you can plan ahead for future costs like resealing the surface or replacing the grout. This will also help you judge how your backsplash fits into the rest of your regular cleaning routines.
