Building a Backyard Pool—What You Need to Know

March 22, 2022

While the Texas sunshine is ideal to chase the winter blues away, sometimes the heat starts to rise a little too much as summer rolls around. Finding various ways to keep cool during the summer months can sometimes prove difficult, but if you’ve been thinking about adding a pool to your backyard, this may be the perfect time to do so. At Weston Dean Custom Homes, our team understands that there are various things you need to think through before you dive into a project as large as this. That’s why we’ve put together a list of a few things you’ll want to consider before building your own backyard oasis this summer.

Make the decision early in the build process

If possible, including a backyard pool in your initial custom home build is the ideal first step since there are a number of things you need to check before you can begin building—such as making sure that there are no utility lines such as water, sewer, gas or electrical running underneath the area.

When it comes to the exact location of your pool, you also need to think about the land you are building on and where it makes the most sense to put your pool. Flat ground is always ideal, but if the backyard of your home was going to be situated on a slight hill, there would be a few extra steps needed to ensure that the ground is reshaped properly to keep the pool from shifting.

Building a pool as you build your new custom home is also a great way to save your landscaping since you will be able to have everything set up and the pool brought in when your home site is already a construction site.

Know what you want out of your pool

This may seem like an obvious step, but that doesn’t mean it’s not necessary. Figuring out what you want out of your pool is crucial to the overall design of it, and it’s a necessary starting point when you bring out a team of professionals to survey the area in order to figure out how best to create your ideal pool on your property. Whether it’s going to be a simple spot to lounge by, a personal waterpark for your kids or a workout area for swimming laps—getting the idea down first will ensure that the pool perfectly fits your needs.
