A Texas Twist on Contemporary Architecture

April 12, 2021

All over the country, homeowners work with experienced custom builders to create the contemporary-style house of their dreams. In different regions, contemporary can mean different things—but no matter where you’re building, there are prominent characteristics that, when combined, create a notably contemporary home. Weston Dean Custom Homes infuses Hill Country flair into contemporary architecture, creating a sophisticated style reflective of modern living with use of local materials and regional design techniques that we call Hill Country contemporary.

Low pitch metal roofs

Low pitch, sometimes flat roofs are a key element in all contemporary architecture. A metal roof not only complements the use of regional stone and stucco on the exterior, it also adds to the longevity. Metal roofs can last 40 to 70 years, depending on exactly which material is used—as opposed to more traditional roofing materials, which have an estimated life expectancy of 20 years or less.

Regional stone, rammed earth and stucco

Although local stone is widely used in Weston Dean’s other regional design styles, incorporating it alongside rammed earth and stucco creates the attractive, clean lines that contemporary architecture strives to create. Using readily available, regional materials also aids in creating a more environmentally friendly home. One goal of contemporary architecture in every region is to create a home that is incorporated into the surrounding environment—and building with these types of materials and finishes helps accomplish that goal. In addition to these more natural finishes, metal accents can add a contrast that elevates the Hill Country contemporary style. Metal brackets and awnings enhance the appearance of each home and look great alongside the metal roof.

Prominent beams and clean lines

Clean lines and geometric simplicity showcase a sleek aesthetic, which helps to create a contemporary look free from frills. The use of prominent wood beams in the interiors adds another layer of clean lines while bringing a natural look and depth to interior spaces. While interior finishes can range from light and bright to dark and moody, an open floor plan with an abundance of natural light will add to the minimalistic feel of these homes and create a great, functional floor plan that families and guests will enjoy.
