Want to keep your new home “green?”

July 20, 2018

The trend as of the last few years is in moving homes, appliances, cars and seeminly most anything onto a more "green" footprint. Whether it is to help prevent toxins from going into your home, or prevent little ones or pets from getting into house hold cleaners that could be dangerous for them, most anyone today would choose to have a more green footprint. However, what if you don't know the first thing in "going green" in your home? Weston Dean Custom Homes, a premier Boerne custom builder, shares tips on how to keep you home both clean and green! Head on over to your pantry and get out your box of baking soda. That small box holds big things in the way of green cleaning for your home. Here are a few ways you can put baking soda to work for you, for a clean and healthy home moving forward. It might soon be a staple on your grocery list! Remove Odors: Baking soda is a wonderful natural way to rid any odors that may be lingering in your refrigerator or freezer. Place an opened box of baking soda in the location of the odor and you will be amazed at how quickly the smell goes away. It is a great idea to keep an open box of baking soda in your fridge or freezer as a staple, and replace every 3 months. Bring silver back to life: If you have silverware or silver items in your home that need a refresh, make a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Use the paste to rub onto your silver and rinse with warm water after giving a warm scrubbing. Dry off each piece before storing. Countertop cleaning: You can clean any surface throughout your home with a sprinkle of baking soda and a damp cloth. Add more baking soda for more of a paste like cleaning mixture, and watch dirt and grime wipe away with your clean cloth. Wash off the surface with clean water when done, to remove all baking soda residue. Removal of scuffmarks: If you have pesky scuffmarks on your floors, baking soda can quickly make those unsightly marks go away. If you have wood, linoleum or tile floors, sprinkle some baking soda over the scuff marks and wipe away with a damp cloth. Magically, your scuff marks will disappear! Furniture saver: If you have kids or pets that have made a mess on your furniture, you don’t have to live with stains forever. Take ¼ cup baking soda and mix it with 1 quart warm water. Rub this mixture onto your furniture and rinse with a hose to remove the paste mixture. You will be left with furniture that is like new! Buy in bulk! With all the ways that you can use baking soda in your home, consider a trip to Sam’s Club or Costco to stock up on baking soda for all the cleaning purposes in your home. Baking soda doesn’t spoil, so it is something you can buy in bulk and store for a long time. Time will not weaken the potency of the powder.     Weston Dean Homes is a San Antonio area custom home builder.  For more information call (210) 408-9107.
