Signs It’s Time to Stop Renting

buying a home

All people come to a point in their life where they must choose between continuing to rent or taking the leap to buy a home. We here at Weston Dean, a premier New Braunfels custom home builder, know that purchasing your very first home here in San Antonio can be both a scary and exciting time in your life. If you’re uncertain if you’re ready to move up in the world, read on for our list of signs it’s time to stop renting or why you may not want to switch from owning a home to renting.

First, let’s discuss some general guidelines that suggest you are ready to purchase a home. Of course, you will want to take a look at the housing market, and let us tell you, things are still strong!  Homes are being built and sold with very quick turnaround, indicating a steady supply-demand relationship between buyers and builders. A stable housing market with still lower interest rates on mortgages makes now a great time to look into buying a home.

In addition to market stability, you’ll want to make sure you have all of your ducks in a row before purchasing your first Weston Dean home in San Antonio. It is not advisable to purchase a home unless you have steady, predictable income and a respectable credit score.

We recommend having 38% or less of your annual income dedicated to paying off student loans or other debts; you should avoid incurring any additional debt approximately one year prior to buying a new house. A typical mortgage should cost no more than 33% of your monthly income. You’ll want to have an emergency fund built up to anticipate any sudden repairs or unexpected changes in income.

Besides the added financial responsibility, there are also lifestyle changes associated with purchasing your own place. Instead of relying on your landlord, you are now responsible for your home’s maintenance, including yard work and any repairs or updating. This allows you the opportunity to truly make the place unique to your personality and gives you the freedom to add details that make a Weston Dean house into the home of your dreams.

If you’re planning on moving one or more times within the next 5-10 years, it may be more advisable to rent until you are ready to settle down. Renting gives you the flexibility to move out when you need to without being financially responsible for the future of the apartment. If you have a significant amount of debt, you may want to waiting until the amount is more manageable before purchasing a new home.

Another reason to wait to buy is if your current job isn’t 100% stable and if you are uncertain if your career will keep you in the same city. If you don’t have consistent income, it’s best not to stress your budget by tacking on a mortgage payment. Marrying a partner, having children, buying a new car or even getting a pet dog are all things to consider when figuring out how to fit a home into the mix.

Talk to most anyone in the custom home building industry and you’ll find that most builders chose to build custom homes because of the heightened opportunity  in utilizing creativity in designing of dream homes for their buyers.  Weston Dean Custom Homes specializes in 5 specific styles as well as leaving virtually every option open for what you envision as part of your brand new home.  Each of these Vision Views as we call them, are available to every Weston Dean home buyer with fully customizable features across styles.  It’s our business to ensure that the amenities you have your heart set on become part of your daily life, one at a time. Weston Dean Custom Homes, a premier Boerne custom home builder, shares what their Vision Views are for their design style.

Spanish Revival Style
This particular design and architectural style is incredibly popular in San Antonio, and every single building trend comes back to the strength of this enduring appeal.  Specific features consistently present in this include a home exterior made up of stone or stucco look and accents, frequently accompanied by what’s known as a red barrel tile roof prevalent in many characteristically Santa Barbara, Mediterranean, and Tuscan homes.  While the nuances between each are heavily detailed, but a fair number of these designs are reliant upon whatever it is that you, as a soon-to-be custom home owner prefer!  A few design choices you can decide between include:

  • Recessed windows
  • Interior, ornate tiles, wood work, and wrought iron
  • Visible, stylized beams
  • Arches

European Style
It’s no secret that America has been heavily influenced by Europe, and that naturally includes our architectural vision.  Traditionally European-influenced custom homes often carry with it homages to or inspiration from the varied Renaissance styles in Europe’s own rich history.  Features characteristic of Weston Dean Custom Homes’ European Style construction involve:

  • Rustic elegance
  • Composition, metal, slate, or flat tile roofs, otherwise very high pitched roofs
  • Divided lite windows
  • Hinged French doors to balconies and patios
  • Masonry exteriors
  • Board and batten shutters

Hill Country Contemporary Style
What is “Hill Country Contemporary” architecture?  This particular design is wholly inspired by Texas landscapes and our love for this state, incorporating modern, contemporary sophistication with rustic appeal, finding an unparalleled balance.  Weston Dean has perfected this style, finding the finest of local  materials and utilizing regional influence.  This not only backed by our high standard of excellence with every single home, but ensures that each one is environmentally friendly and complements the natural scenery.  In a Hill Country Contemporary Style home, you’ll find:

  • Home accents of stone, rammed earth, and stucco
  • Heavy emphasis on regional materials
  • Low pitch metal roofs
  • Beams

Next week we’ll go into detail about our other featured Vision Views.  We invite you to look more in depth at what we have to offer by downloading any of our PDFs for additional specifics.  And as always, contact us for any questions you may have or to get started on your very own San Antonio dream home today!
