San Antonio in Spring

Categories: Moving to San Antonio, San Antonio Custom Home Builders | Posted: April 1, 2020

Any Texan will tell you that spring is wildflower season in the Big Star state. Visit any of our model homes in the San Antonio area, and you’ll see vast fields of flowers starting in mid- to late-March.

The state flower, the bluebonnet, is a favorite. Although typically blue, this wildflower occasionally is seen with light blue, white, or pink blossoms. They thrive on degraded soil, such as heavily grazed or mowed grass. This is why you so often see them lining the roadsides or filling fields. In fact, the Texas Department of Transportation actually schedules its roadside mowing to allow bluebonnets to reseed for the next year.

Besides the popular bluebonnet, you will also see magenta phlox blooms, Indian paintbrushes, and evening primroses. If you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of some blue shrub sage or Mexican prickly poppy.

Many see the prominence of wildflowers in the San Antonio area as the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson, who championed conservation of native plants in Texas. She believed these plants “give us a sense of where we are in this great land of ours.”

For precisely that reason, we believe spring is an ideal time to look for land for your custom home. Seeing your homesite now will give you the chance to see it at its best. Find out what blooms nearby and figure out which directions will give you the best views.

As experienced custom home builders in the San Antonio area, Weston Dean can help you find the perfect lot on which to build your home or if you already have a site picked out, we would love to help you plan a layout that will bring you the best views of the wildflowers around your new home.
