Low maintenance landscaping 101

June 29, 2018

Summer is in full effect and with the summer months also comes the weekly chores when it comes to lawn care. Most homeowners crave to have a nice-looking landscape and home exterior presence without having to spend a good majority of their weekends on lawn care tasks. So, what is the best way to achieve a great looking landscape with minimal upkeep? Weston Dean Custom Homes, a New Braunfels custom home builder, shares low maintenance landscaping ideas for you to try this summer. One of the first ways to drastically cut the time you have to spend on your lawn and landscape, is to switch to low-maintenance turf grass for your lawn. This type of grass cuts down on how often you have to mow, how often you have to comb your lawn for weeks and the fertilizing you have to do for upkeep. This type of grass option is non-demanding and can adapt to different sun exposure as well, depending on if your lawn gets full-sun, partial sun or is mostly in the shade. The other benefit to this type of grass is it will save your water bill, since it is also low-demand when it comes to how often it needs to be watered. When it comes to mowing your lawn, the best tip for lawn maintenance is to go by the 1/3 rule. This means, once a week cut your grass by 1/3 of the blade to best protect it from drought, high heat indexes, and prevents it from being cut too short which can lead to a higher risk of pests and weeds, which everyone wants to avoid during the summer months. If you are looking to plant some flowers this spring, the best flower for a low-maintenance option are perennials. This type of flower will save you time, money and frustration as each spring season comes. Perennials repeatedly blossom for several years, leaving you with beautiful flowers blossoming each spring without the hassle of having to remember what to plant each fall and when. Lastly, do your landscape a favor and mulch your garden beds this spring. Organic mulches like hardwood chips, grass clippings or crushed leaves will nourish your soil and provide beneficial organisms that will regulate harmful bacteria and pest populations. They also give you the benefit of being more valuable as seasons change along with the temperatures, which act as natural insulators that keep the ground cool in the summer and warm in the winter. These simple tips will provide you with a great looking lawn and landscape, without having to spend hours and hours of your time this summer invested in your lawn care.     Weston Dean Homes is a San Antonio area custom home builder.  For more information call (210) 408-9107.
