For the Home: Kid Safety 101

September 13, 2019

If you have recently moved into a new home or have welcomed a new little one into your home, chances are you are having to do some precautionary redecorating of sorts with most every room in the house. A little one wandering around a large space gives multiple ways for trouble to ensure. Weston Dean Custom Homes, a premier Boerne custom homebuilder, shares the top safety tips for baby proofing your home. The first thing many parents think if is their stairs and how to always keep the baby away from them. However, you not only have to worry about the stairs themselves but also the railings next to the stairs. The best way to determine if your railings are safe around baby is to use the tennis ball test. If a tennis ball can fit between the stair balusters, then your small child can as well. You will also want to make sure none of the spindles on your railings are loose. This can easily cause issues if a child is to push or lean on a loose spindle. Next, be sure to cover all accessible outlets in your home to prevent serious injury. Be sure there are secure cover plates over your outlets and then place kid-proof covers over any open or unused outlets. You can pick these up at the hardware store for under $5 a pack. The third thing you will want to monitor is something not many people think about, but causes an average of 30,000 injuries per year. Garage doors are a huge safety risk to your children, if you have a faulty garage door system. You will want to make sure you have a sensor on your garage door, that will prevent the door from closing if there is something it its way. Once an object is detected by these sensors, the door should not move more than an inch once it is detected. Next, move to the fencing and gates on the exterior of your home. Even a brand-new fence can pose for injury issues. Be sure to keep an eye on your kids if you have a fence with jagged or sharp edges. Loose posts are another thing you will want to repair or keep an eye on your kids until it is fixed. Check your gate to make sure it closes and clasps properly. If not, you may have a curious child that will escape your yard quickly without you noticing. Lastly, your kitchen is one of the most dangerous rooms in your home. Be sure to keep a close eye on your little ones if they venture off to the kitchen unattended. Help prevent any safety issues by making sure that knives, heavy objects or objects of heat are out of the reach of little hands. Over 67,000 children experience an accident in the kitchen each year, so installing locks on your kitchen cabinets will be another layer of protection you can add to ease your mind. Once your kids are old enough, educate them on kitchen safety to help them understand the rules to keep them safe.   These simple tips will not only keep your kids safe but your mind more at ease when at home.     Weston Dean Homes is a San Antonio area custom home builder.  For more information call (210) 408-9107.
