From holidays to traveling family members, your home should always be ready and welcoming for those who you want to stay with you at your home for any period of time. However, most people don’t take into account ways that their new home, could be hazardous to their visiting guests- especially elderly guests. It is best to do a once-over of your home before having any guests stay with you for any period of time. Weston Dean Custom Homes shares the top tips for you to review, before having guests stay at your new home.Be sure to secure the rugs and carpets in your home. Using non-slip pads or double-sided carpet tape, secure any loose rugs or rugs that may be on hardwood floor to ensure they are snug to the floor and to help prevent guests from tripping on the edges. It’s also a good idea to temporarily remove throw rugs and bathroom mats to avoid anyone tripping on those as well. Be sure to secure the rugs and carpets in your home. Test your stair railings, both outdoors and indoors, to make sure they are secure and tightly fastened. Make repairs where needed to avoid any accidents.Turn up the lights in your home and add to what you currently have. For example, you can add night-lights in the bathrooms, hallways and kitchen. Make sure there is a lamp or light switch within reach of guest’s bed so they can keep a light on until they get into bed. It is also important to have well-light outdoor walkways and entrances to help for guests they may come in or leave at night. Turn up the lights in your home and add to what you currently have. Rake leaves, salt for ice and shovel snow from the sidewalks and driveways to help prevent falls. Offer the best seat for your guest’s comfort; making sure it is not too high and not too low for them. A firm cushion can help them from sinking in and arms on a chair can help them as they get up or sit down. Add non-slip treads or a matt to your shower as well, to help your guests not slip while in the shower. You can also enhance traction by applying non-slip strips or a suction-attached non-slip mat. Lastly, be sure to de-clutter your home before your guests arrive. Move objects or furniture that guests may need to maneuver around. It is also a good idea to secure wall cords to the baseboards to prevent tripping. Clear stair steps of objects like shoes, books or other personal items.   Utilizing these easy tips will leave your home safe and you worry-free when you have visitors!     Weston Dean Homes is a San Antonio area custom home builder.  For more information call (210) 408-9107.
