Cleaning lampshades 101

May 18, 2018

Spring cleaning may be something you have yet to tackle this season or are planning to do before summer rolls around. When it comes to things that need cleaning in your homes, so often the lampshades get overlooked. Lampshades in people’s homes collect dust and get overlooked because people don’t know how to properly clean them. Weston Dean custom homes, a premier Boerne custom homebuilder, shares all you need to know when it comes to tackling the project of cleaning your lampshades this summer. The first thing you will want to do before you begin to tackle cleaning your lampshade, is to purchase gloves you can wear while cleaning them. This will prevent the risk of transferring oily fingerprints onto the shade that would defeat the purpose in the first place of making the lampshades cleaner. Next, just your lampshade with a microfiber brush or paintbrush. This will bring the dust to the table and area surrounding it where you can clean it up with a dusting pan or vacuum. If your lamp shade has small or odd shaped crevices, use a can of compressed air to work the dust out of those hard to maneuver spots. You can also use a vacuum as an alternative, but be sure to not allow the suction to be so much that it warps the shade with the force. Be sure to hold the attachment 1-inch away from the shade, as it will suck the dust out without damaging the shade itself. For fabric or plastic lampshades, if the stain on them is grease-based, you will want to use baking soda as your method of cleaning. Baking soda is gentle and you can place a centimeter of baking soda on thick over the stain. Let the baking soda sit for five minutes and then brush it off. This will soak up most the stain, making it much less visible. If your stain isn’t an oil-based stain, use a Magic Eraser to gently rub the stain and lift it off the fabric. If the Magic Eraser doesn’t do the trick, you will want to wash the shade by hand. Fill your tub or sink up with lukewarm water and add a couple of drops of mild laundry detergent. Gently mix the water until it bubbles and rest the shade in the water on its side and roll the shade around. If you have a tougher stain, grab a toothbrush that is dipped in soapy water and scrub the stain from the inside of the shade. Doing this from the inside will make sure the toothbrush wont damage the shade. Rinse the shade and spin in the water once you are done to finish cleaning it. Finally, if you have a paper shade that needs cleaning all you need is a slice of white bread to do the trick! Remove the crust off any brand of white bread and rub the bread over the shade. You will be able to see it pick up the dust and grime left behind on the shade. If white bread doesn’t seem to do the trick, grab your Magic Eraser again and gently try to remove the stain. Paper shades are very delicate, so use caution as you attempt to clean them.   Now, you are armed with the tools and know-how to tackle all the lampshades in your home this summer cleaning season!     Weston Dean Homes is a San Antonio area custom home builder.  For more information call (210) 408-9107.
