Celebrate the 4th in Style!

Old GloryGet ready to celebrate the stars and stripes by throwing a Weston Dean neighborhood holiday bash. If you’re stumped for inspiration, check out these cool decorating and dining tips to make your party a hit.

Incorporating red, white, blue, stars, and stripes is a staple of Independence Day get togethers. Pull out and display any holiday decorations, and make sure to hang your flag prominently off your Weston Dean front porch. Small flags can be purchased cheaply in large quantities, so consider stocking up and lining your sidewalk or landscaping with miniatures of Old Glory. Besides the flag, you can use throw pillows and blankets, festive candles, and other accessories to show your American pride this holiday.

Paint chip strips are a simple, inexpensive (free!) way to create single-use decorations for your home and patio. These strips can be rolled into a cylinder around napkins for use as napkin rings or you can create a garland by cutting them into pennant-shaped triangles and stringing ribbon through two hole punches at the short end. Of course, choose red or blue hues for these fun accents to keep with the holiday feel.

Focus on one hue to create a monochromatic feel or host a color party and ask guests to come dressed in red, white, or blue. Make it fun by having a contest for the “most patriotic” partygoer and provide the winner with a small giveaway prize. All guests will walk away smiling with a party favor of sparklers packaged in printed card stock. Use stamps, a computer pattern, or have your kids help out to creatively decorate the sparkler packaging.

Everyone’s favorite part of any holiday gathering is the food, so don’t skimp here! Star-shaped cookie cutters make baking a breeze. If you’re the more artistic type, use a rectangular or special flag-shaped cookie cutter and paint American flags on each one. The classic cherry pie is American as anything and a delicious addition to the table. A tart topped with alternating checkers of blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries adds a colorful touch to the dessert platter.

Nothing goes better with an outdoor party than grilled delicacies, so get out the charcoal and put your top chef to work. A gourmet hot dog bar is perfect for picky eaters; set up bowls of various and unusual condiments to allow each guest to create their perfect ‘dog. Fancy mustards, relish, sauerkraut, ketchup, and fried onions and peppers are classics, but offer your guests more variety by setting out banana peppers, onion rings, bacon, jalapenos, sour cream, shredded cheese, fritos, cabbage, hot sauce, and anything else you can come up with.

Carve watermelons out to say things like “July,” “4th,” “summer,” and other festive words for visual interest before carving.

No Fourth of July is complete without fireworks, so stock up and have a big display after dark. Be careful to review the laws and regulations in your area. San Antonio residents are forbidden to shoot off fireworks within city limits and within 5,000 feet of city limits. Consult your local municipality or call your  city hall to brush up on the guidelines for your area before planning a fireworks display to end all fireworks displays.

Regardless of the types of fireworks your city allows, following these tips is sure to guarantee a happy and fun Fourth. Be safe, be smart, and be excited to celebrate the holiday with Weston Dean.
