Whether you like traditional, extra virgin, Greek, or Californian, olive oil is a staple in most everyone’s pantry. However, did you know that the olive oil you use to sauté your meals, can also be used in other areas of your home? Weston Dean Custom Homes, a premier Boerne custom homebuilder
, shares 6 alternative ways you can put your olive oil to good use!
Many homeowners are turning to more natural and safe products to use in their homes, to help keep their children and pets safe from any chemicals or dangerous ingredients that could be harmful. You can find a lot of good cleaning and all purpose products right in your own kitchen pantry!
The first tip is to ditch the furniture polish and grab your bottle of olive oil. Get a bowl and mix two-parts olive oil to one-part lemon juice, and apply the mixture on a microfiber towel or cheesecloth in a circular motion to your wood furniture.
This is not only a more natural way to remove dust and protect wood from scratches but also can help prevent drink rings from forming. If you have any unfinished wood areas in your home, be sure to use mineral oil instead.
The second way you can use olive oil in your home is to aid in cleaning your garden tools. You can simply put some olive oil on a rag and wipe down the metal parts of your garden tools. This will help you to prevent dirt buildup moving forward, and make it much easier to wipe away the dirt buildup after each use.
Third, do you have any squeaky doors but no WD-40 in sight to fix them? Don’t make a run for the store, rather make a run to your pantry for the trusty olive oil again. By taking either a rag or cotton swab, you can wipe down the squeaky hinge and then enjoy the sweet sound of silence!
If you have any wicker furniture, you can protect the furniture from cracking by either wiping it with warm olive oil via a clean cloth or using an old paintbrush.
The fifth tip you can use your olive oil for is to shine the stainless steel in your home. Wipe down any stainless-steel appliances before treating them with the olive oil, to be sure there is no dirt or debris. Then, find a soft cloth like a microfiber cloth and wipe down the stainless steel in circular motions. Keep the pressure firm and you will watch the surface shine up again right in front of your eyes.
Lastly, this final tip can be used for your future baking endeavors and will save you a lot of cleanup time. Of you are going to bake or cook something that is very sticky, like honey or syrup, dab a small amount of olive oil around your measuring cup before putting the sticky substance in to measure. This will avoid having your measuring cups coated in sticky material and make it much easier to clean.
You can also dab some olive oil on a paper towel and wipe the inside of a muffin tan to prevent losing most of your muffin to sticking inside the tin.
These simple but effective tips can change the way you see your olive oil forever!
